Unfortunately I'm not an expert on this so would appreciate your advice on what upgrades will be most effective to speed up my MacBook or if I should consider a new model. Now that I am using Photoshop and Lightroom a lot it is even slower so I'm thinking about an upgrade. I have a mid-2012 MacBook Pro (2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of 1600MHz DDR3 memory) but it has recently slowed down.

I would not put any money into your current system apart from 4gb of commodity priced RAM. If you are in a financial position to do so you will see an astounding bump in performance by upgrading to a recent or current 13 inch MBP with the base configuration of 256gb SSD and 8gb RAM as well as an incredible improvement in the screen. Unlike Windows you can easily offload seldom used applications to an external drive. It is equally painful by current standards to run Windows on the Core duo platform.Īpart from a minor RAM upgrade the free things you can do include making sure your internal drive has adequate free space and you are running no other programs in the background while using PS. My experience is that CPUs of that vintage will run best on Yosemite or Mountain Lion. Apple will not even install Sierra to certain models for good reason, the reason having to do with software bloat in the OS such as adding features like Siri. The core 2 duo by current standards is just too slow a platform to run current software. Bumping to 8 gb of RAM may have a marginal impact, beyond that zilch (I do not think the machine can use more than 8gb). I am sad to inform you that based on my experience adding an SSD does so little for overall throughput that it is hardly worth the effort of cloning and installing a new drive. I have a MacMini of that vintage with the same processor.
